Why Do You Have to Recalibrate Your Windshield After Replacement?
What Most People Don't Know

You might be shocked to learn how much is going on inside your windshield while you’re looking through it and driving down the road. Even if you’ve never seen it you may have felt or heard it. Does this sound familiar?

  • Your vehicle beeped when you drifted out of a lane.
  • Your vehicle slowed down or sped up while you were on cruise control.
  • Your windshield wipers have come on automatically.
  • Your vehicle ground to a halt because you were about to hit something.

You may be surprised to find out that all these features and more rely on sensors within your windshield, and if you’re used to relying on them, you better make sure they’re properly calibrated. Your safety depends on it!

When your windshield is replaced using insurance, Bay Area Auto Glass will also recalibrate your windshield at no-cost during the same process. That means all your safety features will be fully functional and keeping you safe from the moment your auto glass job is complete. No waiting, no extra trips, just you and your life safely back on the road.

If you want to learn all about windshield recalibration and become the person everyone wants to talk to at parties, keep reading. Everything you need to know can be found farther down the page.

The Rise of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Many modern vehicles manufactured since 2011 have included Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These sensor components feed extra data about the environment around the vehicle to the car's electronic control unit (ECU).

Our Bay Area Auto Glass technicians are ADAS Specialists and are specifically trained to recalibrate these Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, especially after the windshield is replaced.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can include the following systems:

  • ACC - Adaptive Cruise Control
  • LDWS - Lane Departure Warning System
  • HUD - Heads Up Display
  • FCW - Forward Collision Warning
  • PD - Pedestrian Detection
  • LIDAR - Light Detection and Ranging
  • C/S - Condensation Sensor
  • R/S - Rain Sensor
  • LKAS - Lane Keeping Assistant System
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) usually need sensor recalibration after a windshield replacement.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems must usually be recalibrated after a windshield replacement.

These sensors allow the car's computers to assist the driver with staying in the proper lane, parking assistance, collision detection and warning, adaptive cruise control, and more. After reviewing recent literature, AAA's Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that ADAS systems have the potential to prevent approximately 40% of the crashes, 37% of the injuries, and 29% of the deaths from passenger vehicle crashes.

Sensor Recalibration Is Necessary

Some of these sensors include one or more cameras and other devices that are usually attached to a vehicle's rearview mirror. When a windshield is replaced, these sensors must be carefully removed with the mirror, and then they must be reattached to the new windshield.

This disconnection and reconnection of the sensors means that they must be properly recalibrated so that the ADAS data fed to the vehicle's ECU computer is precise and complete.

Bay Area Auto Glass technicians are ADAS Specialists, and understand how to diagnose, service, and perform ADAS sensor recalibrations on on cars, SUVs, and trucks. And unlike other auto glass companies, with our mobile service we can perform the sensor recalibrations at your chosen location, without making you drive your vehicle to a shop.

Once we finish replacing your windshield, we will carefully perform your ADAS sensor recalibration to manufacturer specifications.

What's the Difference Between Static and Dynamic Recalibration?

What’s the Difference Between Static and Dynamic Recalibration?

  • Static Recalibration
Static windshield recalibration post-replacement aligns ADAS sensors and cameras when the vehicle is stationary, ensuring precise positioning. This maintains safety feature effectiveness, including lane departure warnings and automatic emergency braking.
  • Dynamic Recalibration
Dynamic windshield recalibration post-replacement also aligns ADAS sensors and cameras to ensure their correct positioning, but takes its measurements when the car is in motion. This is sometimes referred to as “mobile calibration” and it ensures all of safety features will be effective
  • Dual Recalibration
Dual windshield recalibration involves aligning sensors and cameras in your ADAS, during both stationary (static) and in-motion (dynamic) conditions after windshield replacement. This comprehensive approach ensures optimal positioning for safety features, maintaining their effectiveness across various driving scenarios.

Bay Area Auto Glass has the equiptment and expertise to perform any of these recalibrations as soon as your windshield is replaced so all of your favorite features are working right away.

10 Reasons Why You Might Consider Getting Your Vehicle's Windshield Recalibrated:

  1. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS):
Many modern vehicles are equipped with ADAS, including features like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. Windshield recalibration ensures that these systems function accurately, keeping you and your family safe
  2. Collision Avoidance Systems:
Recalibration is crucial for collision avoidance systems that rely on cameras and sensors mounted in your windshield. Proper calibration is necessary for optimal performance.
  3. Safety:
Correctly calibrated windshields contribute to overall road safety by ensuring that your vehicle's safety features work as intended, reducing the risk of accidents for you and everyone around you.
  4. Accurate Sensor Readings:
Calibration helps maintain the accuracy of sensors that rely on your windshield, such as rain sensors, light sensors, and forward-facing cameras, ensuring they provide a reliable connection to the road around you.
  5. Proper Function of Adaptive Headlights:
Some vehicles have adaptive headlights that adjust based on driving conditions. Windshield recalibration ensures these systems function correctly and maintain optimal visibility at night.
  6. Compliance with Manufacturer Recommendations:
Vehicle manufacturers often recommend periodic recalibration to maintain the integrity and effectiveness of safety features. Adhering to these recommendations can extend the life of your vehicle and keep you safe.
  7. Insurance Requirements:
Some insurance policies may require proper calibration of safety systems after your windshield is replaced to ensure coverage in case of accidents or claims related to safety features.
  8. Legal Compliance:
In some regions, it may be a legal requirement to ensure that safety systems are properly calibrated after windshield replacement, as it directly impacts the safety of the vehicle on the road.
  9. Prevention of Malfunctions:
Incorrectly calibrated windshields can lead to malfunctions in safety systems, potentially causing unexpected issues or failures that compromise the safety of your vehicle.
  10. Maintaining Resale Value:
Vehicles with properly calibrated windshields and functioning safety features may have a higher resale value, as potential buyers are likely to prioritize safety when considering a purchase.

It's important to note that windshield recalibration is required after windshield replacement or if any changes to the vehicle's sensors and cameras have occurred. Regular maintenance and adherence to manufacturer guidelines contribute to the overall safety and performance of your vehicle.
